Ignorance Is Not Bliss

You may have heard the phrase “ignorance is bliss” being thrown around before. For many, this applies to the news, especially controversial political situations which people refuse to get involved with as they live happier lives being blissfully unaware of issues in society. Having spoken to a few idle members of society about why they do not get involved, they have replied “what am I supposed to do?” or “how am I meant to make a difference?”. Simple – you start with yourself!

Politics is not something to shun away from but instead, something to embrace and educate yourself about. How the government works and the laws you live by are as much your business as anyone else’s. The government shapes the workings of your country, so if there is something you know is not right, say something! Your thoughts and opinions can be heard but not when your voice is a mere whisper, a complaint on Facebook or a retweet of something you agree with. Shout it loud; write emails to those who speak on behalf of you and campaign for change.

In countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, we have been given the right to freedom of speech, to stand for what we believe in and call for change in times of injustice! In recent events such as the 30 mass shootings that have occurred this year alone in the US (as of 14th Feb 2018), there is much uproar via all forms of social media about a reform. However, until each person who agrees with this reform begins to actively petition for change, the blood of all the innocent victims is on our hands.

Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance is selfishness, laziness and naivety.
